A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous lump that typically develops along the tendons or joints of the wrists or hands, but they can also occur in the ankles and feet. While some ganglion cysts are painless and may not require treatment, others can cause discomfort, pain, or restricted movement, necessitating their removal.
In some cases, aspiration, a procedure that involves draining the fluid from the cyst, may be attempted first. However, this approach has a higher recurrence rate compared to surgical excision.
